Removal and Control of Skin Discoloration, Lightening Brown Patches and Melasma
Brown patches on your skin can be extremely distressing - and difficult to correct. Seldom do over-the-counter products make much difference. Restoring a natural color balance to skin marred by dark spots and pigmentation, especially on the face and neck, takes a consistent dual step program of
1) lessening existing pigmentation and 2) preventing new pigmentation. Skin Discoloration, whether from hormonally caused Melasma or environmentally-caused hyperpigmentation is one of the most prevalent appearance issues - especially in sunny climates as we have here in Orange County and all of Southern California.
Over active melanin cells are responsible for brown skin discoloration. Only by reducing the skin's ability to produce melanin (color-producing pigment) can a person suffering from brown spots and skin discoloration obtain a satisfactory clearing or color blending of the affected skin.

Cosmelan is a unique pigmentation reduction and pigmentation control program which includes an initial in-office application of the stronger ingredient Cosmelan Mask and a continuing at-home program using additional Cosmelan products to maintain and further the results. Cosmelan is very popular for a number of reasons.
Cosmelan® Depigmentation treatment action is based on the inhibition of tyrosinase, a basic enzyme in the melanin formation process. Several of the substances present in the Cosmelan® formula act by blocking this melanin-producing enzyme.
Degreasing Solution |
Cosmelan® 1 - Cream (10g) [Cosmelan Mask] |
Cosmelan® 2 – Maintenance Cream (30g) |
Mesoestetic® Hydra Vital Factor K Cream (50ml) |
Step 1 – Your skin is prepped by an application of Degreasing Solution to remove oils and impurities from the skin. This allows for the best penetration of the Cosmelan Mask.
Step 2 - The Cosmelan® Mask is applied in a thick layer over the face (and neck if needed) with a thicker layer over blemished areas. You will wear the mask home and leave it on for 8 up to 12 hours. The time is dependent upon your skin type according to the Fitzpatrick scale. You will be instructed on the length of time to leave the mask in place.
Step 3 - After the Cosmelan Mask action time has elapsed, you will remove the mask with water and a neutral cleanser.
Step 4 – Following cleansing, you will apply Hydra Vital Factor K Cream over the entire surface treated.
At Home - Your at-home regime will include a daily application of Cosmelan 2 and the Hydra Vital Factor K Cream. Dr. Sikorski will recommend the proper sun protection as this is an important element in preventing “new” hyper pigmentation. Understand how Hyper Pigmentation occurs.
Depending on the level of your hyperpigmentation Dr. Sikorski may recommend a microdermabrasion treatment and a Salipeel treatment immediately prior to the Cosmelan procedure. This is an advanced step for those with more intense or stubborn pigmentation problems.
*It is important to follow all directions consistently to derive and maintain the results.
Your skin may be reddened following the removal of the mask. This is normal and expected and the level of redness varies with the length of time the mask is used and your skin type. You may also experience a slight burning and tightening sensation for the first 24 to 48 hours. This is also normal and expected. There will be flaking usually between day 2 and day 3. By day 4 your skin discolorations will have begun to fade and your skin will begin to take on a healthier and more luminous appearance.
